My husband is a hospice and palliative care doctor. My first career was as a nurse. I worked as an attorney for Children's Hospital in Cincinnati but I could have never, ever taken care of children myself. I am so glad that there are people like you Estrella, who can face the reality that children die and do all that you can to help. The heartache would cripple me, I know.

I believe that that is why we are all called to be different things. I describe that as, "what always turns your head," when you hear a story, see an article. What do you always respond to? That's our calling.

Courage and strength to you as you do your work. I know you have a strong support network and I am glad that you do.

Oh, my. I can't imagine the night you had - but your post most certainly helps. We are all here to take care of each other; some do it better than most. You are clearly one of those. I admire you for many things, Estrella - most of all in your ability to share, inspire and make a difference. As gut-wrenchingly painful as life can be at times, I have a strong feeling you'll keep doing what you do (so very well) because you KNOW: if not you, then who?
Thank you for sharing this. You are amazing.

It took me awhile to recognize my calling because I spent a lot of my life comparing mine to others. "Why didn't I speak 5 languages?" "Why wasn't I a captain of industry?" "Why wasn't I....?"

I compared myself to others because I have the intelligence and the capacity to achieve anything I want to (I'm also exceedingly modest *g*). However, my frustration was due to the fact that I was trying to align my dreams for myself with other people's lives and not recognizing the beauty and utility of my OWN.

Since then, I have understood the power of being the conduit and using one's own lessons to benefit others. It's a rush. I look forward to spending the rest of my life helping others to actualize their own dreams and their own power. Thanks, Estrella, for the forum to share this, and thank you for being such a loving person. You make a difference in so many lives. Best, M.

Estrella, you nailed this: what authentic CSR FEELS like to the community. If it aligns with mission, is authentic in intent, provides actual benefit, and doesn't smell like PR-in-a-box, this seems to be authentic CSR. This post could be a lesson in "how to do CSR" for all the corporations out there.

Congratulations on being selected as local hero, and more importantly, that GM amplified the work that you love to do so much. Your face is just beaming!

Thanks Estrella - this post is truly a keeper. As I just tweeted: THIS is why I love my job in GM PR, even after 26 years. It's why I get up each morning (bad hair day and all!) and look forward to what I do. Thank you for this.
Loved your photo, too - it's so happily colorful, and captures the vibrancy that is YOU!
